Pins & Tales is the quarterly digital newsletter of SAPFM, published in Adobe PDF format. Issues are sent to current members at the end of March, June, September and December with the latest listings of classes, events, news and articles on research, construction and finishing of historical forms of furniture. Members also have access to all previous issues of the quarterly. This is just one of the many benefits of SAPFM membership.

The SAPFM editorial team is pleased to present the Winter 2023 issue of our quarterly eMagazine Pins & Tales

SAPFM P&T Winter 2023

The end of the year is a traditional time to take stock of where things are and where we want them to be in the coming year. In this issue we have reports from several of our chapters about recent meetings, an update on our recent board election (we welcome three new members), a new initiative with the Winterthur Museum, and the announcement of our Cartouche award recipient for 2024. 2014 Cartouche recipient Ronnie Young was awarded “Best in Show” at the Tennessee Masters Woodworking show and we feature images of his work along with the work of other SAPFM members who participated. Looking forward to next year we announce the dates and location of our Midyear Conference, and list upcoming classes and museum events of interest to our members.

2020 Cartouche recipient Tony Kubalak reports on his recent efforts with a 3D scanner and printer to create models of important details to enable accurate reproductions of carvings on original pieces in museum collections. Imagine the value of having an original carving example on your bench as you work! Tony tells us about the 21st-century equipment he uses to recreate 18th-century masterpieces. We also have an article for Bonnie Hawke, a recent scholarship winner, about her work with the Living Tools Project, a non-profit that connects young furniture makers who need tools with older workers looking for a good home for their tool collections. Along the same lines Brent Richardson tells the story of his efforts with the Woodworkers Guild of Georgia to assist us all in making certain that our families are equipped to deal with our accumulated tools and passes on great information about creating an inventory.

Pins & Tales is one of the many benefits of SAPFM membership along with our website and our annual journal, American Period Furniture. Make sure you spread the word about our society to your friends and neighbors, either in person or through your social media accounts. There are a lot more folks out there who would be enjoy our organization but aren’t aware of us yet and we need your help to increase our numbers. If you have an idea for an article for either of our publications get in touch with me to find out how easy it can be and how much it helps everyone in the organization when you share what you are working on.

Our publications, events and chapter meetings all depend on you to share your efforts in making furniture and helping our organization run smoothly. Make time to volunteer and explore the numerous ways to give back. Every volunteer is important. Your local chapter always needs help planning, organizing and conducting meetings. If there isn’t an active chapter in your area, consider starting one or stepping up to revitalize one.

What we gain from our membership is directly related to what we give back; we hope that you stay involved to keep SAPFM healthy and growing.
